The Lakes Mall | Site & Land Planning, Design & Executive Architect

The Mission-style design of The Lakes Mall was derived from the historical records of the area and the surrounding region, which is situated on the banks of Lake Michigan. Hunting and fishing, as well as the woods and lakes of Western Michigan provided inspiration for the interior.

The nautical ambience is reflected in the name and signage of the mall and throughout the interior. The heron in the ellipse logo continues the Arts and Crafts theme along with the particular font chosen for the signage. The heron is a bird common to Michigan’s Great Lakes.

JCPenney, Sears and Younkers are the major department stores. Bed, Bath & Beyond is also a tenant. The plan also accommodates the addition of another major department store and a theater. The total shopping center is 593,244 sf.
