Lake Nona Town Center | Master Planning | Hardscape Design
At a three-day charrette hosted by Lake Nona Property Holdings, KA worked with a team of leading planners, architects and landscape architects to develop a master plan for a major bio-medical research community. The goal was to create a livable environment, interconnected with housing and a super-regional shopping destination, that would serve a campus of medical-use facilities, including the University of Central Florida’s new School of Medicine, the Burnham Institute for Medical Research, the Orlando Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Nemours--one of the nation’s leading children’s health systems.
As the project’s retail-planning expert, KA designed a 200-acre mixed-use “town center” to anchor the project, careful to prepare a plan that would integrate the ideas and objectives that came out of the initial collaborative meetings. KA deemed the project a “Basic Study in Better Living,” placing particular emphasis on place-making and applying a holistic approach to its planning and design.
In the spirit of the charrettes that began the Lake Nona project, ka held its own internal workshops to identify the future open air community’s needs. Through role-playing, the team assembled a program of amenities and design features that shaped Lake Nona Town Center into a “downtown” area ideal for its community. Public gathering spaces, lush landscaping, fountains and well-designed pedestrian ways will tie together restaurants and specialty retail in an open-air shopping and entertainment district.
