Designed as an environment that would foster collaboration and teamwork among its employee groups, the $28M Northeast Ohio Facility is headquarters to Avery Dennison's Fasson Roll North American Business and houses offices for its worldwide Roll Materials and Specialty & Material Converting Groups. The building program included a conference center, four stories of offices and operational departments, meeting rooms, research and development test labs and pilot coater, and a two-story reception area that links the building's two wings.
Of key importance to the project design was incorporating Avery Dennison's rich historical and corporate culture as an active visual element. The height and length of the walls in the "link" space allowed for the installation of a 100-foot wide graphic display that showcases the company's history and culture. The display also uses high-impact visuals as a way to educate visitors about Avery products. The reception area and cafeteria are positioned at opposite ends of the link to capitalize on the floor-to-ceiling glass walls in the center. The expanse of glazing opens views to the outside, and allows natural light to enter the building, giving the spaces an invigorating freshness. ka worked with Avery Dennison’s art consultant to develop appropriate architectural settings for artwork placement throughout the building.
The primary focus of designing the exterior was to organize the building's different functions with an architectural vocabulary that would both unify them and yet maintain a sense of expressiveness at each individual part while maintaining the economy of a "kit of parts" approach. The design team employed a minimalist palette of pre-cast concrete, aluminum, and clear Low E glass, breaking the building into simple volumes of color that serve as backdrops to repetitive elements and detailing that create rhythm and a unique character.
The project houses Avery Dennison's 154,000 square feet of corporate office space, 24,000 square feet of technical laboratories, a 22,000 square feet pilot coater test facility, two-story corporate cafeteria, visitor reception area, and a 10,000 square feet conference center that can be divided into smaller spaces for group functions.
