The Aerospace Education Center brings together a number of programs and areas, which were previously spread out on the NASA Glenn south campus. By collecting these activities and locating them on the north campus within one facility, they benefit not only from the synergy created between the activities but by being placed on that portion of the Glenn site that is not within the NASA security zone, allowing for free public access.
The facility incorporates a 16,000 sf interactive exhibit area, a 6000 sf auditorium, an aerospace education lab, an education resource center, a digital learning environment, a distant learning center, a broadcast/media area, conference rooms and classrooms, cafeteria, gift shop, staff offices, and a secure outdoor display area featuring large scale aerospace components. The total building program is approximately 60,000 sf.
The Center is arranged around a central two-story atrium space that serves to connect the areas physically and visually, while allowing daylight into the interior of the building. Public areas such as the exhibit area and auditorium are located on the first floor, with staff offices, and educational support areas on the second. The third floor is made up of special exhibit space with a walk off onto a roof top garden.
The project incorporates a number of sustainable design features such as green roofs, solar collecting arrays, exterior sun screens, permeable pavements, and would be anticipated to seek at least a gold level of LEED certification.
