The 180,000 sf Global Sustainable Center is designed to be a living showcase for "green" products and practices, and to expand and accelerate their presence in the construction industry. The building itself, from its exterior envelope, interior spaces and building systems will be built of sustainable materials and systems.

The building's long-term focus is to serve as a research center and laboratory for designing, developing, testing, and marketing efficient and sustainable materials, products and systems that will facilitate rapid commercialization and use for all types of construction and renovation projects. As new products become available, they will be put to the test at the Center to study their effectiveness.

All aspects of the building design facilitate its mission. For example, circulation patterns are designed to allow large groups to tour the facility and see the products in action. Rooftops will serve as a laboratory for studying green roofs, solar panels, and wind energy generators. Even the Center's own mechanical systems will be on display to visitors.

Inside and out, Global Sustainable Center will offer visitors a practical, real-life view of sustainable systems at work. The surrounding site and its green components will be visible from the interior of the building, incorporating into the exhibit a lesson about the holistic approach necessary for effective green building. Components of building systems that are typically behind-the-scenes will be exposed to teach visitors about their role in a building's environmental impact.

Conference rooms, classrooms, and auditorium space will host the numerous training sessions, tour groups, and conferences planned for the facility.

The project and client team intend for Global Sustainable Center to be "off the grid", or, carbon neutral, and has set its LEED Certification goal at the Platinum Level.
