Avery Dennison Northeast Ohio Facility

Duke Realty : Mentor, Ohio

Developed as an environment which would foster collaboration between the various employee groups, the Northeast Ohio facility is headquarters to Avery Dennison's Fasson Roll North American Business and holds group offices for its worldwide Roll Materials and Specialty & Material Converting Groups.  The building design organizes the conference center, four stories of offices and operational departments, meeting rooms, test labs and pilot coater, and reception along a two-story link.

A key component of this project was incorporating Avery Dennison's rich historical and corporate culture.  The height and length of the link walls allowed for the installation of a graphic display showcasing the company's history and culture as well as being a place to display product in a visually-impactful manner for both employees and guests.

The major challenge of the exterior design was to organize the different functions within an architectural vocabulary which unified the functions yet yielded a design that would maintain a sense of expressiveness of each individual part.

In order to meet this goal, a minimalist palette of precast concrete, aluminum, and clear Low E glass was used  in the design.  Using only three colors of precast allowed the building to be broken into volumes of color and repetitive elements to take on their own unique character.  The positioning of the reception area and cafeteria at opposite ends of the link allowed the use of large glass walls to enable expansive views to the outside and daylight to penetrate into the interior giving the spaces an invigorating freshness.

The project programmatically houses Avery Dennison's 154,000 sf of corporate office space, 24,000 sf of technical laboratories, a 22,000 sf pilot coater test facility, a 10,000 sf conference center, two-story corporate cafeteria, visitor reception area and common "link" area.
