Allen-Bradley Headquarters: Mayfield Heights, Ohio

Rockwell Automation

The result of a national search, ka was selected to design the new headquarters for Allen-Bradley, a subsidiary of Rockwell Automation. Review of five potential sites in the Cleveland area revealed that the vacant Landerhaven Golf Course, already being redeveloped into an office park, held the most promise. The new road system, however, did not leave a parcel that would be large enough to accommodate Allen-Bradley's programming needs. ka therefore suggested a reconfiguration that freed up enough land to support not only the project, but its future expansion as well.

With the project's location set, ka was determined to preserve the many mature trees that would help make the new headquarters appear as though it had been there for years. By carefully siting the building and its outdoor amenities within the fairways of the former golf course, the facility only enhances the surrounding vegetation with its accent landscaping, ponds and walking trails.

ka then devised a scheme to preserve the mature trees by placing the buildings and parking within the existing fairways. Major entryways, breakout areas, trails, ponds, and landscape accents were also configured to save existing vegetation, making this new headquarters appear as if it had been part of the site for many years.

ka carefully designed the building with the intent to create residual value. By developing the plan with this in mind, the building has the flexibility to expand in the future or even downsize if needed. Today, the 462,000 square foot building accommodates 1,250 employees and promotes great operational efficiencies within a comfortable, campus-like setting.
