The Aerospace Education Center will bring together several educational and research program offerings currently spread out on the NASA Glenn's south campus. Grouping the activities onto one site will not only create a stronger synergy, but also allow them to be enjoyed by the public, outside of NASA's security zones.
The facility will be an all-digital learning environment that includes an interactive exhibit area, a resource center, an auditorium, an aerospace education lab, distance learning, broadcast and media facilities, conference rooms and classroom space, a cafeteria and gift shop and a secured outdoor exhibit area for displaying large-scale aerospace components. The total building program is approximately 60,000 sf.
The proposed campus centers around a main building that will house the educational and exhibit facilities. A bright, airy atrium will welcome guests, its two-story glass windows providing light and a visual connection from inside the building to the skies above. A third level will house special exhibition space with a walk-out onto a rooftop garden.
Sustainability is a key design element, employing such techniques as exterior sun screens, permeable paving, solar collecting arrays, and green roofs. The project and client team have set the project's LEED Certification goal at level Gold.
